![]() ![]() They will also tell you the best places for shelling and the captain is very nice and informative! we got off on shell key and walked about 10-15 minutes to the northern point(wish we went further) but we found SO MANY SHELLS!!! and not just your average shells, like many many Sand dollars, conch shells, and the big orange spotted ones! when we returned to the boat we saw that 2 other groups found conch shells that they literally sell at homegoods for $40. they give you a parking pass that’s good for the whole day. The shuttle is very COVID friendly and you are required to wear a mask on the shuttle. Last minute my boyfriend and i decided to take a trip to shell key, and we were not disappointed!!! to start off, we arrived 30 minutes early, and the man selling tickets noticed my USAA card and gave us military discount! he was very nice and we chat for a bit about florida. I thoroughly enjoyed walking along the beach, looking for shells and enjoying the untarnished beauty of the nature preserve that is Shell Key. The sun was shining, so I'm sure they had gotten used to the temps. I did see several children who were completely immersed in the frigid water and having a wonderful time. I waded in up to my waist, and that was enough for me. The water was really cold, so my plans to snorkel did not materialize. I think the best shells had probably been picked over by the time I got there, so I RECOMMEND CATCHING THE EARLIEST SHUTTLE, if possible. The first mate recommended looking for shells on the north and west coast of the island. I did take the complimentary snorkeling equipment, but I knew that the last shuttle left in a couple hours, so I probably wouldn't have much time to sit under the umbrella. I also brought my own beach chair, drinks, and snacks. I had read other reviews, so I knew to wear my Crocs, as I would be walking on shells almost the entire time I was there. He also offered snorkeling equipment and an umbrella for complimentary rental during our time on the island. When we got to the island, the first mate gave us complimentary shell bags. On our way out to Shell Key, we saw some dolphins, so the captain paused the boat to let us see them more closely. The captain and first mate were wonderful. I had planned to go to Shell Key on a different day, but my plans changed, so I quickly jumped on the last shuttle of the day, leaving at 2:00. ![]()
